Our program will tell the history of Léon Casimir Brû (1837–1918) a celebrated 19th-century French artisan and doll maker, best known for creating the exquisite and highly collectible Bru dolls. His Parisian firm, Bru Jeune & Cie, revolutionized the toy industry during the late 19th century.

About our program:  

Kenner debuted its Blythe line in the early 1970s. It was a market flop and discontinued within a year. Decades later, these iconic dolls have been embraced by a new audience of enthusiasts and have found unexpected success. This program will focus on original Blythe dolls leading up to the unveiling of the 2025 President's doll at the UFDC national convention, which will then be added to the UFDC museum's permanent collection.

Going Home!

 

There's no place like home, and for doll collectors with ties to UFDC, that place is Kansas City! Many members of DSCB are heading to off to our organization's highly anticipated 2024 annual event to proudly represent doll enthusiasts from the New England area. Per tradition, DSCB will be sponsoring the Maggie Iacono meal event, including preparing and providing the meal's welcome, program, decorations, and party favors, as well as managing the operations start to finish. This special dinner is the highlight of this international gathering for many attendees, and for good reason! <3

Looking forward to seeing old friends, and meeting new ones, at the August, 2023 United Federation of Doll Clubs annual meeting in Bellevue, Washington. Our annual DSCB fundraiser auction, which will took place entirely online this year, was held from November 21st through December 5th, 2020. All UFDC members from Region 15 were welcomed - and encouraged - to bid early and often! And they most certainly did.

2020 DSCB AUCTION LOGISTICS

Bidding, Delivery, and Payment Information
Bidding for our auction is easy – follow the steps below:

Step 1:  Find the item of your dreams in our catalog.
Step 2:  Check on the current bid and decide on your high bid.
Step 3:  Email Rosemary Laverdiere (rlaverdier@aol.com) with the following information:

• Item # and Title
• Your bid amount
• Your name, address, email, and phone #
• Give yourself a bidder’s ID (10 characters or less)

Step 4: Check back here on the DSCB website often to determine if you are the high bidder.  High bids will be posted on a regular basis along with the bidder’s ID.

Delivery and Shipping
We want you to be comfortable bidding on all the items, even the large ones. So, DSCB will be delivering your auction wins to you at no cost if you are within a reasonable distance for travel within Region 15. Several members have offered to make these deliveries. If your item is small enough to be shipped at a reasonable cost, shipping will be free.

If you are the high bidder, here is what you need to do!
You will receive an email indicating that you are the winning bidder. The email will act as the invoice for your winning auction items.  We ask that you pay by check only. The email will give you the mailing information.

We Are Zooming!

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, the Doll Study Club of Boston has begun holding our monthly board and general member meetings on Zoom. We will continue doing so for the foreseeable future, until it is safe and allowed to gather in larger groups. Although nothing compares to meeting in person, this platform helps us to maintain our connections and share our passions for all things doll related - just at a distance!

Dr. Hunter will focus on some of the unusual and little-known sources for the names of Madame Alexander’s dolls as well as the dolls created from those names. The celebrities, literature, characters, and everyday designs are well known, but early names and designs required extensive research. This program seeks to bring to light some of those more remote sources of inspiration.

Nationally recognized Madame Alexander expert Dr. Marsha Hunter lives, breathes, and loves all things Madame Alexander. Hunter has been a Madame Alexander collector for 45+ years and published the book, Alexander’s Rag Line, in 1982. She has served on the board and as as the president of the Madame Alexander Doll Club. She was awarded that organization's Service Award - the highest honor that the Madame Alexander Doll Club can bestow on a member - in 1998.  A long time UFDC member, Hunter has also received the UFDC Award of Excellence for the Special Exhibit, Celebrate Madame Alexander: Her Life & Her Legacy with her friend, Pat Burns.

Gaithersburg Road Trip 2019!

Join The Doll Study Club of Boston for a bus trip to the Gaithersburg, Maryland Doll and Toy show. Our motor coach will leave on Friday December 6th, 2019 at 6:30 am, and will return on Sunday, December 8th, 2019 around 6:30 pm.

Reservations with full payment must be received by September 30th, 2019. This invitation is extended to all doll clubs, doll enthusiasts, spouses, and companions. The first 25 people to sign up will receive a free entrance ticket to the show.

The cost for round-trip transportation is $114/pp for DSCB members and $151/pp for non-members.

You will be responsible for the cost of your meals and hotel accommodations. Contact the Gaithersburg DoubleTree Hilton at 1-301-977-8900 to make your room reservation. When you call, press "3" and ask for the Doll Study Club of Boston rate of $89/night plus tax and fees. In order to get this special rate, you must make your room reservation by November 6th, 2019. We have reserved 20 rooms on a first come first serve basis. Each room has two beds if you want to share.

A Tree Grows In.... Kansas City

During our member Ada Diedrich's national Presidency, United Federation of Doll Clubs sought a donation to replace a tree that had died at the organization's headquarters in Kansas City. Doll Study Club of Boston sponsored the purchase of the replacement tree. The tree is lovely and has more than doubled in size since being planted almost a decade ago. Thanks To You, Our 2019 DSCB Annual Fundraiser Was A Smashing Success!

It takes a village to do just about anything worthwhile, and such is the case with our great DSCB team that brought our annual event to new heights. Our esteemed guest list of 75 passionate doll collectors included folks from all over New England, the East Coast, the Midwest, and even as far away as London and Paris!

Our guest speaker, Bradley Justice Yarbrough, told the engaging story of John W. “Jack” Ryan who was instrumental in creating the Barbie line along with Ruth Handler! The talk was riveting, and Bradley did a fantastic job of delivering this history. He was also kind enough to hold a Mattel themed identification and valuation clinic for us at the end of his program.

A huge shout out to our favor team who put together the Barbie "LBD" outfit modeled above. This dynamic duo put together 75 of these breathtaking take-aways. Thank you, thank you!

A big round of applause to another devoted team member who created the incredibly eye-catching and visually stunning Barbie-profile lava lamp centerpieces. And to the remarkable seamstress who surprised all of us with homemade cloth flower corsage buttons as a "bonus" event souvenir.

And to everyone who did the real event day legwork, ranging from event check in, auction management and payout, table and venue logistics, and hospitality, it is our efforts together, and the synergies that we create as a club, that makes us shine so brightly.

"Jack” Ryan (1926-91) who was instrumental in creating and launching the “Barbie” line along with Mattel co-owner Ruth Handler in the 1950’s.  Ryan’s colorful biography reads like a tale ripped straight from the headlines of the National Enquirer.

2018 DSCB Road Trip

Please join the Doll Study Club of Boston on a fun-filled bus trip adventure to the famous Gaithersburg, Maryland Doll and Toy Show! The trip is scheduled for Friday, November 30th through Sunday, December 2nd.

The trip has been priced to be as inclusive as possible. The cost for round-trip transportation, including our driver's accommodations and gratuity, is $89 per person for DSCB members and $119 per person for non-members. You are responsible for the cost of your meals, entrance fee into the show, and accommodations, giving you the chance to share a room if you choose. Contact the Gaithersburg Hilton at 1-301-977-8900 to make your room reservation ASAP.

We are extending this invitation to all doll clubs, doll enthusiasts, spouses and companions. Reservations with full payment must be received by September 27th with first priority given to Doll Study Club of Boston members.

Our 2018 Annual Fundraiser Hits It Out Of The Park!

On May 19, 2018 we held our annual DSCB fundraiser event. We had 71 total people register and pay to attend. Most attendees were from Region 15, but others came from all along the East Coast.

Our speaker was Rachel Hoffman from Ruby Lane. Her topic was "The Future of Doll Collecting: Buying, Selling, and Engaging The Next Generation Through Social Media and Community Building." Our emoji-themed event included a silent auction consisting of 47 regular lots and 4 closed bid lots, a sit down, plated lunch, Rachel's talk, door prize drawings, and doll appraisals.

We were very honored to have current UFDC leadership in attendance, including Ada Diedrich (DSCB President, past Region 15 RD, and past UFDC President); Susan Voake (current Region 15 RD); and Dr. Barbara Stone (current UFDC Vice President.) Many former Region 15 RDs
also came.

A great time was had by all and we hit our financial and attendance goals. Thank you to everyone who volunteered before, during, and after the event to make it possible!
